Jiin Oh

A (black) comedy writer-director.

Jiin started her filmmaking career while working as a product designer for an IT company in South Korea (Yes, that company). The very first and lamest short film she sneakily made during that time, ironically led her to believe in the power of the story. She quit her job and decided to leave Seoul for New York to embark on a new journey as a storyteller. During her final scholarship interview at Fulbright Korea, one of the interviewers asked her, “Which genre do you want to make?” Baffled and blaming herself for not preparing for this filmmaking-101 question, she said, “Well I am not sure which genre I want to make, but I know which genre I definitely won’t make… a romance.” They all burst out laughing... and decided to grant her the money for that answer (uh oh). And also thanks to Columbia who overestimated her short film and threw her money, she is attending the Screenwriting MFA at Columbia University for free, yay!

In 2022, this novice filmmaker gradually found her passion in comedy. She believes laughter is the purest form of reaction that a human can have, and a handful of humor is what we need in this busy, chaotic, and too-high-priced-oyster city. She is currently editing her final project at Columbia, “SPEEDY!”
